From Lagos

to Jersey City.

Chef Olaide learned standing next to her mother.

Born in Nigeria. Trained in her mother's streetside restaurant in Lagos — that's where she got the smoky bottom-of-the-pot jollof down. Then formal culinary school. Then years cooking for the Nigerian community in New Jersey.

Olaide's Kitchen opened in Jersey City to give a community that was driving to Sayreville and Parlin a place closer to home. Every soup, every stew, every plate of pounded yam — made from scratch, in-house, the way it's done in Yoruba kitchens.

"You can't fake the bottom of the pot. The fire knows."
— Chef Olaide Tella

WHAT THE COMMUNITY SAYS

The Nigerian community drove from three counties.

Now they come from across the river. Real West African food, owner-cooked, no shortcuts.

★★★★★

"Best jollof in New Jersey. Smoky, perfectly seasoned, and the goat meat is fall-off-the-bone tender. Reminds me of home."
